Player Chokes Teammate: Renaldo Balkman Grabs Neck of Arwind Santos in Fit of Rage [VIDEO]
A former NBA player choked his teammate in a fit of rage during a Philippine Basketball Association game on Friday. Renaldo Balkman, who used to play for the New York Knicks and the Denver Nuggets is making headlines around the world after a video of the outburst went viral and was reported on major basketball websites.
Balkman from the Petron Blaze Boosters, appears arguing with officials after he misses a shot against the Alaska Aces in a game to earn the top spot. Balkman claims he was fouled. First he hits the referee in the arm, then when his coach approaches to calm him down he shoves him and finally chokes his teammate Arwind Santos with one hand.
"I got caught up in the moment of a very intense game. I respect @Arwind029 as a person & player. I am proud to be part of @PetronBlaze," Balkman tweeted after the game on Friday.
"I wld like to apologize to the fans, Petron Blaze, my teammates, the PBA and especially @tubidronald71 and @Arwind029," he added in a second tweet.
The Boosters lost 73-83 to the Alaska Aces.
The Philippine Basketball Association's comissioner Chito Salud summoned Balkman to his office Monday morning, according to Pbaddicts.net and the team's coach Olsen Racela, reportedly gave the players two days off to "cool off."
The site reports that it may be unlikely that Balkman will be fired. Sports Director for the San Miguel Corporation Noli Eala, said he will stay.
"He'll stay. He gave us 5 wins. It was just an off night," according to Inquirer.net.
Balkman was signed by the Petron Blaze Bossters in December 2012 to play in the 2013 Commissioner's Cup.
