After pulling themselves out of a hole in Dunedin, the English side will have to dig even deeper in the Basin when they square off against New Zealand in the 2nd Test on Wednesday.

Even if England's first innings nightmare of 167 can be chalked up as just another cricket mishap, they surely learned not to underestimate the New Zealand squad. The English was able to salvage the 1st Test thanks to a combination of centuries by the opening pair, an unanticipated half century and a lifeless pitch.

England finished the respective match only 120 ahead with 6 wickets gone so it's not unrealistic to say that if the match went a full five days, then the results would've turned out quite differently for England. The team's slow starts have been a less than ideal situation for England coach Andy Flower, who admitted that they must attempt to change up their preparation process.

The one strength that the English has is the ability to learn quickly for their mistakes after shaky starts, as the centuries of Cook and Compton showed a strong determination to not replicate the performance that the team put up in the first inning at the 1st Test.
