Outlander's Claire Fraser has one tragic relationship coming her way.

The time-hopping heroine found the soul mate in the 1700s, but another trip through the standing stones will throw her back into the arms of her first love. Unfortunately for Frank, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) won't be ready to dive back into her 20th century marriage.

"I always look at Claire and Jamie's relationship as a very different entity as Claire and Frank," Balfe told TV Guide. "[Now] the tragedy of that relationship - which I think is so great to watch - is Frank really loves her. People bash on Frank but you know, the poor guy, he got this woman back who he loves and she's pregnant with another man's child and she tells him that she'll never love him again. I think that's so tragic."

It certainly sounds tragic. After all that time Frank (Tobias Mezies) spent searching for his missing wife, their reunion will be far from happy (see video below). For Claire, the Highlander she left behind will hold pride of place in her heart.

"When Claire and Jamie meet, that's a very equal love, and that is something bigger than both of them and it spans time and space and all these things," Balfe explained. "That's the true soul mate."

Find out how Claire will cope with her two husbands when Outlander returns to Starz on April 9.
