Making a Murderer subject Steven Avery may be heading towards exoneration in a matter of months!

Avery is currently in prison for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, the case chronicled in Netflix's docuseries Making a Murderer. There has been a lot of renewed interest in the wake of this series, and attorney Kathleen Zellner has taken it upon herself to prove Avery's innocence as his new lawyer.

Curtis Busse, the man behind the Steven Avery Project, spoke with WIBX 950AM recently about the progress so far in Zellner's case.

"We're not even looking for a new trial. We're actually looking for an exoneration," Busse revealed. "Zellner's very confident, and Steven is also very confident that it's not gonna take that much time. And we're talking months here."

There has reportedly been a slew of new, recovered evidence that should be able to prove Avery's innocence in the case.

"Phone records, DNA, there's alibis there that weren't proven the first time that Zellner is taking to the next level and gone the extra mile to prove," Busse said. "They're going to show that the blood [in victim Teresa Halbach's car] and the age of the blood, it's not going to match up between the two."

Assuming Avery does end up exonerated in the end, he will apparently be looking to sue Wisconsin's Manitowoc County. He previously sued for $36 million after being exonerated for a sexual assault conviction - for which he spent 18 years in prison.

"If they thought that [the] $36 million lawsuit was huge, a $100 million lawsuit will be a lot worse on their plate this time," Busse warned.

Zellner tweeted in February about the new evidence they've found in the case and why Avery is "smiling" nowadays.

It remains to be seen if anything will come of the new evidence.

Making a Murderer is currently available to stream on Netflix.
