The Davidson Wildcats, a No. 14 seed in this season's NCAA tournament suffered a 59-58 loss to the No. 3 seed Marquette Golden Eagles on Thursday.

Davidson had a 9-point lead with under seven minutes to go before Marquette heated up the court: the Golden Eagles began the game a putrid 1-of-11 from the 3-point line but banged home three of their final four attempts down the stretch.

Marquette was led by Vander Blue, who finished with a team-high 16 points and hit two crucial 3-pointers late, as well as the game-winning shot. He scored seven of Marquette's last 10 points. After a Blue trey, Marquette turned the heat up on a full court press that forced an errant pass that went out of bounds. On the ensuing possession, Blue drove past a helpless Jake Cohen and got an easy layup that made the score 59-58

After the game Cohen told reporters, "I got switched onto him and he got by me. Hindsight's 20-20. It's really easy to look back now and draw up something different. He made a big play and made a big shot."

Cohen had a game-high 20 points for Davidson. When asked about his game-winning lay-in, Blue said, "All I was thinking was, 'If I get to the rim, I have to finish. I'm not ready to go home. I know our team's not ready to go home."

Blue did much of the Golden Eagles' scoring late but had help from Jamil Wilson, who drilled a trifecta immediately following Blue's that cut Marquette's deficit to 58-57. Wilson finished as Marquette's second-leading scorer with 14 points off the bench.

Davidson entered the game on a 17-game winning streak that was the longest in the country at the time. Davidson head coach Bob McKillop was gracious in the face of a tough defeat after the game, saying,  "We emptied our tank today. Credit Marquette, they made three plays down the stretch."
