For the first time since The Blacklist began, Red Reddington is at a loss.

The criminal extraordinaire bid farewell to his protégée and confidant (to the extent that Red confides in anyone) during "Mr. Solomon: Conclusion," and James Spader's character will have to deal with the fall out as season 3 comes to a close. As he does so, his past actions will weigh heavy on his mind.

"He finds himself, in the first half of the season, all of a sudden with somebody and therefore responsible for them, that he is completely unprepared for them to come to an end," Spader told Entertainment Weekly.

Red is essentially an island, and he might regret not letting Liz (Megan Boone) across into his tangled jungle of secrets. Keeping his master plan to himself insures intriguing reveals from week to week, but should Liz have died with her mind still full of questions?

"There's some very confounding questions that he's faced with that to a great degree, I think, questions of purpose, questions of looking to the past about choices and decisions that he's made in the past, and what the consequences of those choices and decisions have turned out to be, and how much investment he has in a future," Spader explained.

Liz's funeral is slated for episode 20, but first the series will put Red front and center in "Cape May."

"A mysterious beauty on the run from unknown assailants accidentally crosses paths with Reddington and enlists his help to fight back against her attackers," NBC teased.
