911 Dispatcher Sends Mom to Rescue Stranded Kayaker Instead of Sheriff Patrol [VIDEO]
A 911 dispatcher sent her own mother on a rescue mission to save a stranded boater in Washington state. The 45-year-old kayaker was hanging onto a log after her kayak sank near a jetty by a swift current on Sunday. She was with a companion who went to seek help.
Wahkiakum County dispatcher Raedyn Grasseth said she sent her mother to the Columbia River to rescue the stranded kayaker because she knew her mother could kayak to that area faster than the patrol boat sent by the sheriff.
Grasseth explained to The Daily News: "Jetties are very dangerous. The currents around them are horrible. It sounds likes her kayak just got sucked toward the jetty and went down." She explained that the stranded woman climbed up to the log piling as much as she could and waited for help.
Grasseth said she sent her mother, Cindy Faubion, who live nearby, after realizing that they could get to the stranded kayaker quicker than the sheriff. "I knew they could be there within five to 10 minutes," Grasseth said.
Faubion and other members of her family paddled their way to the kayaker.
The unnamed rescued woman did not receive medical attention but was reportedly cold and shaken after the incident, according to AP.
