There is no denying the fact that Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. With each new iteration of the game breaking records and endearing old and new fans alike, each upcoming installment in the franchise is met with much excitement and speculation.

Recently, a source, who has opted to remain anonymous, stated that the game developer is already starting the development of the sixth game in the franchise, rumored to be dubbed as Grand Theft Auto VI, or GTA 6 for short. Considering that the last installment in the franchise, the mammoth GTA V, was released two years ago, it is not surprising that work on the next installment is already starting.

What is probably most interesting about the rumors from the anonymous source, however, is the speculation that the next GTA title would be set outside the United States. In fact, Rockstar has allegedly been exploring the possibility of a GTA title in foreign lands so seriously that members of the game developer's staff traveled to Tokyo, Japan, in a reference trip for the game. This allegedly happened a few years back, when Rockstar was developing GTA: Vice City.

It is also quite interesting to note that back in 2003, Take-Two Interactive filed trademarks for a number of compelling game titles. They were GTA: Tokyo, GTA: Bogota, as well as GTA: Sin City. Though none of the titles have actually become official entries in the franchise, the fact that Take-Two actually filed for the trademarks further exhibit the developers' willingness to take the chaotic fun of the GTA series to foreign soil.

As much as a GTA game set in Tokyo or any other foreign land would be interesting and undoubtedly fun, the shift in the game's theme and other pertinent aspects would surely create some challenges for the game's developers. After all, much of GTA's charm has always been rooted in its satirical version of the United States. Car models alone and brands would result in a lot of work for Rockstar Games.

Then again, Rockstar Games has never really disappointed when it comes to the quality and innovation of the games in the GTA franchise. Thus, regardless of where GTA 6 would be set, there is very little doubt that it would be an instant classic.
