Those that have been hesitant to try out Nintendo's handheld devices might be a little bit more enticed to jump into the firm's massive handheld gaming ecosystem, as the Japanese gaming giant announced on Wednesday that starting May 20, the firm's entry-level handheld, the Nintendo 2DS, would be priced at a very reasonable $80.

Oh, and that's not all. Not only does the $80 cover the cost of the console. The deal also includes a free copy of Mario Kart 7, one of Nintendo's most beloved entries into the chaotic fun that is the Mario Kart franchise.

The Nintendo 2DS has always been the gaming firm's entry-level device, designed to give gamers a glimpse of what Nintendo has to offer. Missing a number of the flagship New 3DS's features such as the glasses-free 3D graphics of the 3DS, the 2DS is nonetheless a pretty capable gaming device, being able to access and play almost the entire library of 3DS and original DS games.

Despite its limitations, however, the 2DS found a lot of love from Nintendo's fans, especially parents who are wary of giving children gaming devices at a young age. Due to the classic hinged design of the more premium 3DS, a number of parents have been quite hesitant about purchasing one for their little children. After all, hinges and 3-year-olds rarely mix well.

With the 2DS's slate-like design, the handheld was observed by users to be very durable, being able to survive drops and other similar accidents. Thus, relatively underpowered as it was, the Nintendo 2DS was a success nonetheless.

Priced at a competitive $120, the 2DS debuted in 2013 as a budget-friendly alternative to the more expensive hinged DS line. Last year, Nintendo slashed the price of its slate-like 2DS, dropping the cost of the handheld device to just $100. With yet another price cut this year, and with a free game to boot, it would not be surprising at all if Nintendo manages to sell a great amount of the devices to consumers within the next few months.

A number of notable handheld games are set to launch this year, including Kirby: Planet Robobot on June as well as Pokemon Sun and Moon this coming November.
