Kyle Chandler's role in Netflix's Bloodline is a far cry from his usual roles, but the actor is loving it.

Many fans of Friday Night Lights, in which Chandler starred as a lovable football coach, were shocked to see him playing such a complex antihero in Bloodline. Chandler's performance as John Rayburn in the Netflix series is not exactly a likable one; he is, in fact, a very flawed human being with a short fuse, lashing out on his family and others quite frequently.

The role may be challenging, but Chandler seems to appreciate the exercise as an actor.

"It's been enjoyable; it's been challenging. I know that the character of John has got a pathology that's very intricate and his psychology allows him to do what he does and keep it under control. It's been enjoyable to get inside and play those little intricate alterations with him, within the character," Chandler said, in a new The Hollywood Reporter interview.

"When I'm onscreen working with the other characters, there's so much going on in the background of my mind, it's really fulfilling," he continued. "There's just so much to play. Maybe not so much that you see onscreen other than [my character's] actions, but as an actor, my mind is just full of lots of different colors swirling around, and there's so many options for me to play the scenes in so many different ways."

Much of season 2 is spent with John desperately trying to cover up his murdering of his brother, Danny (Ben Mendelsohn), and protecting his family by any means necessary.

"It's survival. It's possible eventually it could turn into a game. There's a place where eventually John could believe this can't last forever, might as well enjoy it because it's got to end sooner or later, which could push him into even further places to go," Chandler said. "Maybe he could jump off the edge."

The first two seasons of Bloodline are currently available to stream on Netflix.
