The Future Trunks saga has finally started in Dragon Ball Super and boy oh boy, it sure did not disappoint. From the beginning of the episode to the end, the stakes were raised and the Dragon Ball world became darker. With the narrative seemingly taking its current direction, is Dragon Ball Super finally ready to get serious?

The Dragon Ball franchise is built upon a story that is light and epic at the same time. However, as the years went by and as its fans matured, many lamented the fact that Dragon Ball is still geared towards younger audiences until today. This particular notion has practically been proven by the previous Universe 6 vs. Universe 7 arc, where almost no one dies. Indeed, it seemed like Dragon Ball Super's characters are safe. That is, of course, until now.

Episode 47 showed a world ravaged by a man named simply as Black. Of course, Black is the personification of the enemy that series creator Akira Toriyama dubbed as Black Goku. What makes Black Goku so frightening is the fact that seemingly does not hesitate when it comes to inflicting pain and killing others for pleasure.

This could be seen in the fact that Black Goku nonchalantly killed the two most important women in Trunks' life without even flinching. Indeed, in just one episode, Black Goku became one of the baddest, most intense villains in Dragon Ball history, killing Bulma and Mai, devastating Trunks.

With this first episode, Dragon Ball Super has managed to make its new arc far more serious than those behind it. In fact, one could almost feel as if Dragon Ball itself is getting more mature, exploring themes and events that were previously far too serious for the franchise.

From what could be seen so far, the Future Trunks arc would be the time when Dragon Ball Super finally decides to grow up and be more mature. The Universe knows that is what is required in order to destroy the arc's sinister new enemy.
