It's been a few months since Castle was shockingly cancelled by ABC, and the new entertainment president of the network addressed this Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour.

The final season of Castle was less than ideal for fans who were keeping up with the show's behind-the-scenes drama. After star Stana Katic (who played Beckett) was fired from the show, alongside supporting star Tamala Jones (Lanie), it seemed like ABC was going ahead with a ninth season without them. Nathan Fillion (Castle) then negotiated a new one-year contract and mere weeks later, ABC cancelled it.

Channing Dungey, the new ABC entertainment president, spoke with reports at the TCA press tour on Thursday about how they didn't have anything to do with Katic and Jones being fired from the show.

"That was a case where you have things running on parallel tracks," Dungey stated. "We were always up front with the studio and the producers about the possibility that we might not be bringing the show back for Season 9. But the studio has to do what they need to do in order to prepare for a possibility of a Season 9."

Dungey did not offer a concrete reason as to why they chose to cancel Castle.

"Ultimately, for us at the network, we did not feel that it was the right thing to do to order another season," she said.

It's no secret that ABC received a lot of flak when it was revealed that Katic had not been asked to return for season 9. After all, the Castle-Beckett dynamic had been part of the show's DNA from the very first episode, and to not have that felt like a betrayal to some fans.

As for whether Fillion or Katic will return for new projects on ABC, Dungey reportedly said after the session that no such plans have been made, according to Deadline.
