Single mothers everywhere may be able to find something in common with Sam Fox on the new FX show Better Things.

The show, premiering tonight at 10 p.m. on FX, follows Sam (Pamela Adlon) as she tries to navigate the tricky world of raising three daughters by herself after a divorce, while balancing a career as an actress that is isn't overly forgiving anymore now that she's reached a certain age. However, not only does it manage to tell a convincing story, it also gives a little bit of sneak peek into the hectic life of mothers like Sam-because it is also semi-auto-biographically based on Adlon's own life.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Adlon admits that several scenes in the show's first episodes play off of experiences she's had in her own life, and she has tried to make ot as authentic as possible, by hand-picking almost every element of the show.

"My show, every single aspect of it was important to me," she said. "I handpicked every single song, every single piece of clothing, every extra. I wrote out the title credits by hand."

She also revealed that there is stuff that is unique to her life as a mom and an actress, and she uses that to also add to the show when she writes it.

"You know, it's me," she said. "I'm a mom of three girls. I have an English mom who lives next door to me. [Played by Celia Imrie on the show]. That's pretty much my life. I'm an actor. I've done dirty stuff on camera. I do kids' stuff for animation. I'm just like a working guy, you know? But then the stories that I'm telling are thin
gs that are just everyday life things and things that people are going through."

Better Things premieres Thursday, Sept. 8 at 10 p.m. on FX.
