The Moon is the closest celestial object from our planet. It is a satellite which is known for its infamous spots. These spots are the results of meteorites hitting the surface of the moon. This occurs due to the fact that the moon has no atmosphere and so unlike Earth, the large bodies of space rocks do not disintegrate before reaching the surface of our Moon.

Although that may sound somewhat desolating, the moon always gets hit with meteorites and it is a sense of norm everyone has accepted. However, recently more meteorites have been meeting the surface of our moon than expected according to E Science News.

At first one may sound confused as to why one keeps record of asteroids hitting the moon and on what grounds are there expectations that should not be crossed. What many do not realize is that this is highly important for us humans because some of us go there occasionally!

That being said, Nature said that a high number of meteorite impact on the moon could prove highly dangerous for space programs which are thinking of setting up lunar bases. These bases will be set up for long term and meteorites will not be helping in any way.

The moon is constantly being bombarded with these meteorites and some can be so large that even when they impact the ground, debris and dangerous shock waves can be sent miles away from the attack point. A base even in the vicinity of a shock wave could be in serious trouble.

However one cannot lose hope as it may take time, but science will find a way to avoid or possibly prevent any disasters that could follow with this.

The main threat here is not the meteorite landing since the chances for that are very small. The main threat is the splattered debris which has a higher Area of Effect.
