Niall Horan made his solo debut at the American Music Awards Sunday night, performing his debut single, "This Town".

While Horan had performed with One Direction the past three years at the AMAs, this was his first performance on his own. He sang his acoustic ballad "This Town", a song about what he wanted to say to a lover who got away.

Horan signed a deal with Capitol Records in late September to produce his first solo album. "Thank you to all the One Direction fans for your love and support as always," Horan said in a statement at the time. "I'm looking forward to the next part of this journey together."

One Direction is currently on a hiatus as its various members pursue their own projects. The fifth member, Zayn Malik, left the band last March and was also in attendance at Sunday night's ceremony. Malik, who now just goes by Zayn, was nominated for New Artist of the Year.
