With many of its characters making the trek to New Orleans for it's The Originals spinoff, many fans of CW's The Vampire Diaries are surely wondering what lies ahead for the TV series when it returns in the fall.

Executive producer Julie Plec spoke to TVLine about what VD loyalists can expect when the show kicks off in Mystic Falls for its fifth season.

"We're definitely going to be entering an entire new world at Whitmore College, so we'll get to meet new friends and new enemies," she said.

Plec also added that they'll be "new romantic interests for some of our characters" in the upcoming installment.

According to Wet Paint, it's a possibility that Tyler (Michael Trevino) may be shooting for Caroline's (Candice Accola) love with a brand new college crush, and the now human Katherine (Nina Dobrev) may seek a younger man since she now has her mortality to consider.

Although no airdate has yet to be announced, Vampire Diaries Season 5 is slated to begin in September. Its spin-off series, The Originals, is set to relaunch at some point in October.
