Joran Van der Sloot to Wed in Behind Bars; Natalie Holloway Suspect in Peruvian Prison
Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch man suspected in the murder of American teenager Natalee Holloway, is planning a June wedding in prison, ABC News reported Friday.
Van der Sloot, who in a Peruvian prison for the murder of a Peruvian woman, is going to marry his girlfriend Leydi Figueroa Uceda in June, according to his lawyer, Maximo Altez.
The couple have known each other since early 2011. The two met when Figueroa visited someone else at the Castro Castro Prison where van der Sloot was being held awaiting trial.
Van der Sloot, 26, has since been convicted of the murder of Stephany Flores, from Lima, and sentenced to 28 years.
Altez sought a sentence reduction on Wednesday for Van der Sloot, who pleaded guilty to the 2010 murder of Flores, who he met in a casino.
Altez has hopes that his appeal, based on a series of technicalities in the initial interrogations and the extradition of van der Sloot from Chile, will be able to free van der Sloot.
The lawyer told ABC News that he is awaiting confirmation from the prison authorities for the ceremony to be held inside the Piedras Gordas prison where van der Sloot is currently incarcerated. Rumors spread a year ago that a child that Leydi gave birth to was fathered by van der Sloot, which Altez says is untrue.
Local journalists apparently said jailhouse weddings are quite common in the country. Piedras Gordas is a large and fairly modern maximum security prison facility located about one hour north of capital city Lima.
Van der Sloot remains the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance in his native Aruba of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway. Holloway vanished during a senior class trip and her body was never found.
