FX's The Americans returns Tuesday night for its fifth season, with even more resonance now than ever.

The Americans, which centers on a pair of KGB spies living in America, gathering intel and carrying out special missions, feels even more relevant in today's time than it ever has. With consistent accusations of President Donald Trump's cabinet being in contact with Russia during the election, the FX drama series seems to have stumbled into very timely waters five seasons in.

Beyond the surface level comparisons, though, The Americans has always been about the masks we wear around different people, and the struggle to find and maintain your identity. This continues in the season 5 premiere, titled "Amber Waves", with Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) dealing with tense situations both personal and professional.

"As Philip and Elizabeth struggle to contain the risks from Paige's [Holly Taylor] growing relationship with Matthew Beeman [Danny Flaherty], the Centre sends them on an operation unlike any they've ever had before, straining their family and marriage to its limits," says the FX synopsis.

Other stars returning for season 5 include Noah Emmerich as FBI Agent Stan Beeman, Brandon J. Dirden as FBI Agent Dennis Aderholt, Costa Ronin as KGB Officer Oleg Igorevich Burov and Keidrich Sellati as Henry Jennings. Recurring stars include Frank Langella as Gabriel, Margo Martindale as Claudia and Laurie Holden as Renee.

The Americans season 5 premieres Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX. An encore presentation will air directly afterwards at 11:11 p.m. ET/PT.

If you are not able to watch the premiere on television but still want to watch it live, FX has its own stream on its website. You'll need to enter your cable subscription information to access the live stream.
