Tobias Menzies hints that he will return as Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones Season 8. However, he's teasing fans that his character's fate is not looking too good.

Uncertain Fate

The last time fans saw Edmure Tully was during the brutal Red Wedding massacre in Season 6 when Walder Frey took him as his prisoner. He was not seen since then, although Menzies seemed to confirm that he will be in the final installment of the HBO series.

However, the question is if he remains a prisoner, especially that Arya Stark already massacred the remaining male members of the Frey family. To recap, Arya used her face-changing skills to disguise herself as Walder Frey and poisoned the men during a banquet.

Menzies weighed in on the question of Edmure Tully's return in an interview regarding his character's fate in Game of Thrones Season 8.

"The honest answer is, I have no idea. He's obviously somewhere in a prison, he's still around alive somewhere," Menzies told Digital Spy.

The actor reasoned that details about his character remain unclear because the show's writers are keeping them under wraps (possibly to avoid spoilers). Edmure Tully could be dead, too.

After all, Walder Frey had Catelyn and Robb Stark killed during the infamous wedding. He even had Robb's pregnant wife and his men massacred. It is anyone's guess if Walder Frey spared Edmure Tully's life.

"They're pretty stingy with their information and I've not heard anything from them. I feel like they have so many stories to tie up, whether that's a story they'll want to go back to, I don't know," the actor said.

New TV Role

In George R.R. Martin's books, Edmure Tully is still a prisoner at Casterly Rock of House Lannister. The series has already swayed so much from the books that fans cannot look into it for answers.

By Season 7 of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen's army has overrun Casterly Rock. The last time Catelyn Stark's younger brother was with the Lannister was in Season 6 when Jaimie used him as bait in order to conquer Riverrun.

Game of Thrones Season 8 does not air on HBO until 2019, so fans have a long wait to find out if Edmure Tully is still alive and still a prisoner.

Menzies, on the other hand, returns to TV screens as the new Prince Phillip in Netflix's The Crown. He took over the role from Matt Smith.
