As with many American holidays, the 4th of July is traditionally a day when TV networks air marathons of beloved shows.

Here are some of the highlights to check out in celebration of America's Independence:

The Walking Dead - AMC (1 p.m - 3 a.m.)

AMC will be airing the entire first season of their zombie hit The Walking Dead today, starting at 1 p.m. with the first episode. The network will be airing the entire series in order over the four-day weekend, ending on Sunday, July 7.

John Adams - HBO (12 p.m. - 8 p.m.)

To truly celebrate Independence Day, this seven-part miniseries chronicles the life of America's second president, John Adams, and his contribution to the founding of the nation.  With an all-star cast including Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson (who all won Emmys for their roles), this miniseries is a holiday-friendly selection.

The Twilight Zone - Syfy (8 a.m. - 6 a.m.)

Horror anthology series The Twilight Zone is a staple of most marathon days, so Syfy is rerunning episodes for 22 straight hours.  Since it is a half-hour program, there will be a total of 44 episodes aired consecutively, including such classics as "Eye of the Beholder", "Living Doll" and "The Invaders".

NCIS - USA (6 a.m. - 6 a.m.)

TV's highest-rated drama NCIS will be playing from 6 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday on the USA network. The series skyrocketed to 25 million viewers this January and hasn't showed signs of stopping.  The series will be entering its 11th season on CBS this fall.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - BBC America (8 a.m. - 6 a.m.)

The third season of Star Trek: The Next Generation is being aired in its entirety on BBC America.  The beloved series, starring such actors as Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton and Jonathan Frakes is airing a month and a half after Star Trek Into Darkness debuted in theaters worldwide.

In addition to these marathons, HBO will be airing a documentary special featuring the late James Gandolfini.  The 2007 documentary, titled Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq features Gandolfini interviewing American soldiers who have returned from the war in Iraq.  It will air at 7 p.m. on HBO.
