The Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman opened in theaters on Friday and, so far, has gotten mixed reviews.

New York Post's Kyle Smith gave the film two-and-a-half stars saying the film "might be thrilling if special-effects pictures came along four times a year instead of four times a month."

While watching the film, Smith said the fight scenes and chases were not intense enough to make a viewer gasp. "Aren't these villains falling like dandelions versus a weed whacker? Why is Wolverine impervious to a sword through the heart but captured when a bunch of arrows hit him in the back?" he wrote.

On the other hand, Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan praised Jackman for his commitment to be the main character for the film's sixth movie but thinks the Wolverine lacks character development.

"Unfortunately, not even Jackman can completely rescue his character's latest outing," Turan said. "The Wolverine is an erratic affair, more lumbering than compelling, an ambitious film with its share of effective moments that stubbornly refuses to catch fire."

Michael O'Sullivan from The Washington Post gave the action film a more positive review with three-and-a-half stars and calling The Wolverine "a refreshing summer cocktail." While the critic thinks there are "great set pieces," the movie came with a few drawbacks.

"It goes down super smooth but packs a punch, erasing not only the memory of Marvel's last foray into the Wolverine mythos, the 2009 stinker X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but also washing away the more recent unpleasant aftertaste of this summer's other Tokyo-set action thriller, Pacific Rim," O'Sullivan wrote.

The film totaled a 68 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes from film critics and an audience rating of 81 percent liking it. The 3-D sequel, which cost approximately $120 million to make, is expected to bring in between $75 million and $80 million its opening weekend.
