A new "Bourne" movie could be heading to the big screen.

Universal Pictures is laying the groundwork for a new chapter in the high-stakes world of super spy Jason Bourne, with discussions underway to bring acclaimed filmmaker Edward Berger on board as the director, Deadline reported, citing unnamed sources.

The "All Quiet on the Western Front" director is reportedly in talks to helm the potential blockbuster, signaling a fresh installment in a franchise that has amassed over $1.6 billion at the global box office across five films.

While the project is still in the early stages of development, the prospect of a new "Bourne" movie raises intriguing questions about the direction the franchise might take.

As of now, no script has been penned, and the involvement of original cast members, including Matt Damon, who portrayed the amnesiac assassin in four films, remains uncertain. Jeremy Renner, who starred as black ops agent Aaron Cross in "The Bourne Legacy" in 2012, could also be part of the equation.

But Variety suggested that Damon being involved in the new project "might be more likely" than Renner returning.

According to Deadline, while Damon is not attached to the new project, he will be approached once a script is finalized.

Previous movies in the franchise were directed by Doug Liman (2002's "The Bourne Identity"), Paul Greengrass (2004's "The Bourne Supremacy," 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum" and 2016's "Jason Bourne") and Tony Gilroy ("The Bourne Legacy").

Despite Damon not being officially involved in the new project, he previously said he was open to returning to the franchise under the right circumstances.

"If there's a story to tell, and we think people want to hear it, then who knows?" he said in a 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly.

But Damon emphasized the importance of collaborating with Greengrass, stating, "I'm tied to Paul, whatever he wants to do."

"We didn't want to dive into one unless we could make a movie that fit in that family and felt worthy," he added. "It's kind of deceptively tricky, and so I think we were just leery of making it look like a job that was taken on cynically by any of us. To have made three of them that we loved, it just felt like we should live well enough alone unless we could make a good one."

If the deal to direct the new "Bourne" project materializes, Berger brings a wealth of creative expertise to the potential new installment.

His most recent film, "All Quiet on The Western Front," was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won four.

His next movie is the thriller "Conclave," starring Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini.
