Lupita Nyong’o’s Role as Helen of Troy Ignites Online Racist Backlash— Elon Musk Blasts Diversity Rules in Hollywood

Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o has recently found herself the subject of heated internet debates after news that she is part of director Christopher Nolan's epic movie called "The Odyssey," which is set to be released on July 17.
As per Atlanta Black Star, the movie based on the famous Ancient Greek story was already creating a buzz before its premiere, but recent controversies surrounding her portrayal of Helen of Troy have made people discuss issues of race and history in the movie industry.
According to early promotional material and online discussions surrounding the film, Nyong'o will portray Helen of Troy as well as her sister, Clytemnestra. Helen is widely known in Greek mythology as the woman whose abduction sparked the Trojan War.
The role has previously been portrayed by white actresses, including Diane Kruger in the 2004 film "Troy." Some critics online argued that casting Nyong'o in the role strayed too far from traditional depictions of the mythological figure.
Social media reactions quickly turned divisive, with critics accusing the production of altering Greek history and mythology. One commenter wrote via People, "Helen of Troy was not black. Enough with the cultural appropriation and history stealing."
Others criticized Nolan directly, claiming the casting decision ignored Greek heritage. Several responses circulating online also included racially charged remarks targeting Nyong'o's appearance.
At the same time, supporters defended the actress and praised her casting, pointing to her acclaimed acting career and global recognition for her beauty and screen presence. One supporter wrote online, "Lupita is so stunning it's only right."
Actor John Leguizamo, who appears in the film as Eumaeus, publicly praised the project, calling it a must see movie of the decade and describing it as "forward thinking" and "innovative."
The controversy intensified after conservative commentator Matt Walsh criticized the casting on X, formerly Twitter. Elon Musk later echoed Walsh's comments, accusing Hollywood of hypocrisy and criticizing diversity standards tied to Academy Award eligibility requirements.

Musk also questioned whether diversity and inclusion standards influenced Nolan's creative decisions. Current Academy Awards guidelines require films seeking Best Picture consideration to meet inclusion standards in areas such as casting and production leadership.
Despite the criticism, several public figures defended Nyong'o. Actor Alec Baldwin posted a photo of the actress on Instagram and wrote, "Dear Elon... but she IS the most beautiful woman in the world."
Nyong'o and Nolan have not publicly addressed the controversy.
Nyong'o won her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years a Slave. Many fans online believe her performance in "The Odyssey" could position her for another Oscar nomination when the film debuts in theaters next summer.
