Although BBC America's Copper has officially been canceled, the intended third season may find an outlet in movie form.

Created by Tom Fontana and Will Rokos, the series received the ax on Thursday when the network announced that the Civil War-era drama would draw to a close with this Sunday's season 2 finale.

"Copper has been a fascinating and exciting experience for everyone involved," said BBC America GM Perry Simon, according to Entertainment Weekly. "[Fontana and Rokos] vision to re-tell the immigrant experience through the melting pot of New York City was an original and fresh idea that melded well with the essence of BBC America's programming. After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story."

However, fans of the series may not be left high and dry. Fontana and executive producers Barry Levinson and Tom Kelly are reportedly mulling over the possibility of a movie adaptation of the already created third season material, according to Deadline.

While the bulk of the original series dealt with the trials and tribulations of Civil War America, Deadline states that the proposed movie version would take a look at the life of New York City cop Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones) during the era of Reconstruction.

Copper airs it's final episode Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on BBC America.
