Michael J. Fox is returning to television Thursday with the premiere of The Michael J. Fox Show on NBC.

The single-camera sitcom stars Fox as Mike Henry, a retired news anchor who returns to the job after five years. Mike was forced to quit his anchor job after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. When he goes back to the force, he struggles to deal with work, family and his disease.

Breaking Bad's Betsy Brandt co-stars as Mike's wife Annie. The sitcom also stars Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as a smooth-talking network executive and Tony winner Katie Finneran co-stars as his flighty sister Leigh.

The sitcom has already received praise from critics as one of the best new shows of the fall. It was awarded one of the six Most Exciting New TV Series from the Critics' Choice Television Awards in June.

The Michael J. Fox Show marks Fox's first regular television role since leaving ABC's Spin City in 2000. He has since appeared as a guest star in several television shows, garnering Emmy nominations for his appearances on The Good Wife, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Boston Legal. He won an Emmy in 2009 for his guest role on Rescue Me.

Fox's real-life Parkinson's disease helped create the character he's playing in The Michael J. Fox Show, and some of the humor derives from it without poking fun in a mean-spirited way. In their review of the pilot episode, IGN noted, "a lot of this episode revolves around tame-ish jokes relating to Fox's disease, easing those who didn't watch his amazing guest appearance on Curb Your Enthusiasm into the fact that it's okay to laugh at it (because he is)."

The series also adopts a documentary style similar to Modern Family, in which the various characters have their own confessionals to explain what they're thinking.

The Michael J. Fox Show premieres Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9:00 p.m. on NBC. The show will then air Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. in its regularly scheduled timeslot.
