The best performers at the Top 4 Performance show on American Idol yesterday were Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez though Philip Phillips managed to get great reviews.

The remaining four singers Joshua, Jessica, Philip and Hollie performed a song by a Californian artist/band and another song they wish they had written.

According to most reviews, the best performance was by Sanchez when she sang "And I am Telling You I'm Not Going," by Dreamgirls. She earned a standing ovation from the judges and amazed even skeptic critics.

"Jessica finally rises to the top of my ranking for the first time in weeks after positively killing the 'Dreamgirls' song," wrote Billboard's TV critic Kevin Rutherford.

Steven Tyler said it was "another winning performance" and "over the top".

Randy Jackson said she nailed one of the hardest songs in the world to sing.

The next best performance that also received a standing ovation was Ledet's rendition of James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World."

The judges were amazed by his passion. Tyler said he has never heard anything like that in his life while Jennifer Lopez said she was blown away by the "passion" and "corazon" (heart).

Finally, Phillips managed to wow the judges with his "Volcano" performance by Demien Rice.

Lopez said it had "Joe Cocker quality."

"I heard the musician that time, man. You just sang like you really dug the way you sung. I never heard you sing like that before," Tyler said.
