Facebook users may have noticed a sudden abundance of comic strips featuring their friends dominating their newsfeeds lately thanks to the newest online craze, Bitstrip.

The app launched its 1.1.7 version for iPhone, iPod, iOS and Android users this week. It landed the top spot on the free-apps section of both the App Store and Google Play with more than 10 million users-increasing in huge amounts since its 3 million monthly average users back in July, and catching on significantly since its initial Facebook launch in April.

Bitstrip VP of Marketing Shahan Panth called the app "the next step in the evolution of social media" after more than 50 million cartoons were shared in July alone.

The Toronto-based company, which has used virtually no advertising to promote the app, will next seek newer markets that allow them to earn some capital on the mega-successful app.

"We're exploring native ads, and we're adding premium content and features like premium clothing," Panth said. "We'll also be bringing your Bitstrips character into the real world with plush toys...the next big brand is you and your friends. You are the next superhero."

The app claims to be "the most customizable avatar-creation tool on the Web," according to The International Business Times. It allows those who use it to create and share comics about themselves and their friends with personal messages, using a database of more than 1,000 customizable templates.

"Bitstrips is hard to categorize because it's not a game," CEO Jacob Blackstock told The Baltimore Sun after the initial launch. "It's a new way to express yourself and interact with your friends. Instead of posting the same things as everyone else, you can create something that relates to your life."

Blackstock believes the app will resolve the "frustratingly flat" status of modern social media, especially in the company's core age 18-24 demographic.
