The Bachelorette 2012: Premiere Episode Had Weird Surprises for Emily Maynard
"The Bachelorette" Emily Maynard met her 25 bachelors on Monday during the premiere of the shows' 8th season, the first to feature a single mother as the leading woman.
Maynard was engaged to her daughters' father NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick when he died in a plane accident.
"I was scared just because I've been through a lot. I've been in love twice and I've lost it twice. I fell in love with Brad hard and I really genuinely thought that was it,"she said in a brief chat with host Chris Harrison.
But she said she was very excited.
"I am so nervous... This can be the night that I meet my husband.. that's really exciting."
The first episode had a lot of surprises, including Maynard revealing that she wants "a minivan full of babies," one of the contestants arriving to the party in a helicopter and another dressed as an old lady.
"That was impressive," Maynard told Kalon, the luxury brand consultant from Houston who arrived in the helicopter.
"Very creative," she told Randy, the marketing manager who dressed like an old woman.
An advertising rep showed up to the party at the Charlotte mansion carrying a giant egg.
"This egg is a symbol of some beautiful people, you and Ricki, and throughout this journey I will take care of this egg like I would take care of you and Ricki," Travis told Maynard.
The guy who received the first-impression rose from Maynard was Dough, a single father from Seattle who brought to Emily a letter his 11-year-old son wrote for her.
Jef, a CEO from Salt Lake City caught her attention after he arrived riding a skateboard.
"I really like Jet," said Emily. "He made a great first impression. He's super cool, and I hope he thinks I'm cool, too."
The bachelors remaining in the competition are Chris, Ryan, Kalon, Arie, Charlie, Jef, Nate, Sean, Joe, Kyle, Aaron, Alejandro, John, Alessandro, Michael, Stevie, Tony and Travis.
Among the men eliminated were Lerone and Brent, a father of six.
