Lauren Conrad opened up about her surprise engagement in Cosmopolitan's January 2014 issue.

The former MTV star, who covers the issue, told the magazine that when her fiancé William Tell popped the question to her in October, it took her by surprise.

"I had no idea it was coming," the reality star-turned fashion designer told Cosmopolitan. "I thought he would wait until he finished law school.

She said she was especially caught off guard because the former Something Corporate guitarist did not seek advice from any of her friends beforehand.

"He didn't even ask my friends [what kind of ring to buy], which was a bold move. He said, 'I know you, and I know what you like.' And I love it. It's perfect," she said.

Conrad also offered advice for her fans who are considering marriage and suggested that they take their time and focus more on the relationship than the wedding itself.

"You have the rest of your life to be married. Enjoy falling in love," Conrad said. "When girls get caught up in the timeline, it becomes more about wedding than the marriage. You should be with someone with whom you could elope this weekend and be happy."

She added: "If you're going to settle down, it should be with someone you can't stop thinking about, especially if you're in your 20s. If I were single in my 60s, I would totally settle. I would!"

Conrad began dating Tell on Valentine's Day in 2012. She announced their engagement on Oct. 13. The couple moved into her condo in Los Angeles' Brentwood neighborhood before he asked her hand in marriage. Tell is currently attending law chool while Conrad works hard on her clothing line available in Kohl's.

The January 2014 issue of Cosmopolitan arrives on newsstands on Dec. 3.
