Phillip Phillips was crowned the winner of American Idol on Wednesday amid a spectacular finale show.

The 21-year-old from Leesburg, Georgia, made history after a record 132 million votes were cast for the winner tonight.

Jessica Sanchez from San Diego, California, ended second.

Phillips performed "Home" at the end of she show with his guitar.

As the confetti fell Phillips was crying. He walked down the stage to his family and give them a hug.He also hugged the judges.

The show featured appearances by Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, a tribute to the late Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees and Aerosmith.

The finale also featured performances by former Idol contestants and a proposal on stage.

Jennifer Sanchez and Jennifer Holliday belted out a very powerful hair-raising rendition of "I'm telling you I'm not going."

Phillip and Jessica sang a duet "There the Eagles Fly" before the results were revealed.
