With Homeland killing off one of its major characters in the season 3 finale, many were left wondering where the show would go next for season 4.

The death of Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) provided an end to the story Homeland set out to produce from the beginning. With the central premise of a U.S. soldier possibly working for Al-Qaeda now over, the show will focus a lot more on Carrie (Claire Danes) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) as they maneuver the geopolitical system.

Homeland showrunner Alex Gansa spoke with TVLine about where the show was headed for season 4 and who would be returning in major roles.

"One of the ideas that we're really toying around with next year is [to have] Carrie go and do what she was trained to do, and that is be a case officer in a foreign country," Gansa teased. "And as she mentioned to Sen. Lockhart [Tracy Letts], she gets to choose her own people. So Quinn [Rupert Friend], Fara [Nazanin Boniadi] . . . Virgil [David Marciano] and possibly Max [Maury Sterling] may come along with her. We get to bring some of our familiar faces overseas."

Homeland Spoilers: Will Brody's Family Appear in Season 4?

With Sen. Lockhart assuming his new position as CIA director, Saul (Mandy Patinkin) takes on his new role as a private contractor to the CIA.

Gansa said that season 4 would "definitely" be featuring Saul, adding, "The rationale is, [Saul] is now a private contractor, and the CIA does outsource so much intelligence work to these private contractors. So even though Saul may not have a desk at Langley anymore, his interface with the agency is going to be big."

Homeland season 4 premieres in 2014.
