The director of HBO's True Detective recently discussed the challenging, six-minute final shot of the most recent episode of the show, revealing the process behind its construction.

Episode 5 Preview Features Cohle Being Set Up for Possible Arrest?

The six-minute take at the end of True Detective's fourth episode was heavily praised by critics and audiences alike. The show's director Cary Fukunaga spoke with MTV News about the climactic scene, which involved Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) proceeding through a series of locations.

The scene featured the following of Cohle through a housing project, over a chain-link fence, through multiple shootouts and ultimately to Hart's (Woody Harrelson) car.

Cohle Quitting Police Force After Fracturing Relationship With Hart?

"We had ADs [assistant directors] all over the neighborhood because we had to release extras, crowd running background, police cars, stunt drivers," Fukunaga explained. "There were actual gun shots and stones being thrown through windows. There were a lot of things to put together. Even the action, the stunt sequences were complicated."

Making things even more difficult, Fukunaga, the cast and the crew were forced to work on the more restricted schedule of television rather than film.

"We're working on a television schedule. It isn't like a film where you can spend a lot of time working the stunts out with the actors," Fukunaga said. "We only had a day and a half to get Matthew and everyone else on the same page."

The next episode of True Detective, titled The Secret Fate of All Life, Hart and Cohle celebrate their solved case in 1995 while the 2012 detectives question them with new intelligence.

True Detective airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
