Though speculation has been going on for some time that the writers of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would be breaking tradition and re-tooling the role of the Green Goblin, the first official proof of it has been revealed.

Green Goblin Part of 'The Sinister Six?'

In the traditional comic books stories, The Green Goblin was initially the villainous identity of Norman Osborn, president of Oscorp. After his defeat at the hands of Spiderman, his son, Harry, a friend of Peter Parker's, assumes the role.

However, a new photo that Sony Pictures released to Total Film magazine confirms speculation that Harry (Dane DeHaan) would portray the super villain, instead of his father's character.

The photo shows a scene of Spiderman/Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) struggling to fight off Green Goblin/Harry in a machine-type setting at Oscorp. As he holds Spiderman down by the throat, a crazed looking Goblin is without his mask as he looks up and out at the scene around him.

Potentially even more telling about the scene is prior photos released which Show Peter's love, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in the same setting, wearing the same outfit the character wore when she was killed by The Green Goblin in the original comic book series. If the events do pan out where Green Goblin kills Gwen, the photo which shows the villain unmasked now could occur after the fact, when Peter tries to enact revenge on the person responsible for murdering his one true love.

The movie will also see Peter face off against two other villains in The Rhino/Aleksei Sytsevich (Paul Giamatti) and Max Dillon/Electro (Jamie Foxx).

Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into theaters May 2.
