As fans of MTV's Awkward gear up for the fourth season premiere in April, new showrunners Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler have teased a few potential surprises for the characters as they enter senior year.

Ming Not Returning to Palos Hills

While some characters will not be returning this time around, Alberghini and Chessler do promise that the characters who remain will have some interesting arcs as the season progresses.

"It's a year where possibility exists for you to get into the most trouble you've ever been in, and it's also the time when you really have to hit the ground running, and get your s--t together, because the rest of your life is about to start," Alberghini said in an interview with Buzzfeed March 10.

Jenna Lonely in Season 4?

The only steady couple on the show, Jake (Brett Davern) and Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) could potentially find themselves as victims when they realize just what senior year means for their futures.

"It's a relationship that has worked, but, without giving anything away, his is a time when you start reevaluating what works about a relationship," Alberghini said. "Also, as you become older, your tastes become more sophisticated, and you become more discerning about what you want in life. I think that carries through to the relationships on our show this year."

"There were some things that happened in Season 3 with Jake and Tamara that needed to have some ramifications," Chessler added. "Like, when she ran for president and won, I think she usurped part of his identity, so that's something we're going to play out this year."

They also revealed that things will continue to be difficult for Matty (Beau Mirchoff) and Jenna (Ashley Rickards), as Jenna will still be dealing with the ramifications of her breakdown during the previous school year, and Matty will be finding a potential new love interest with a new character.

"We always liked the idea of having s--t stirrers in the mix, so we brought in a new romantic interest for Matty, a girl named Eva [played by Elizabeth Whitson], who is a much more sophisticated version of a high school girl than Palos Hills has ever seen," Alberghini said. "She's had lots and lots of experiences; she's sort of like a blonde Angelina Jolie and everyone is awed by her at first."

Alberghini and Chessler also made sure to reassure fans that just because the show was entering senior year in season 4, doesn't mean it will be ending soon.

"Season 4 ends with spring break...It doesn't have to [end with graduation]. There's definitely a show beyond graduation," Chessler said.

Awkward season 4 premieres Tuesday, April 15 at 10 p.m. on MTV.
