Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) put his life on the line to keep Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) from sharing his inescapable watery grave, but the determined scientist was not about to leave her best friend behind. While Simmons managed to pull Fitz 90 feet to the surface, crushing water pressure and the bends forced the engineer into the arms of Fury's (Samuel L Jackson) medical team (see video below).

Alive - but still in a fragile state - Fitz was unable to rejoin his team (sans Ward) when the finale came to a close, and his absence has many viewers wondering if former director Fury is cooking up some new miracle to keep the youngster alive.

Executive producer Jeff Loeb claims the ABC series is leaving that mystery open for exploration in season 2,

"We wanted to leave something there for the audience to speculate in terms of where we're going to go," Loeb told TV Guide. "The fun of what Jeff, Jed [Whedon] and Maurissa [Tancharoen] created in the season finale is that there are some things that are very neatly tied up and there are some things that are left open, so we'll start the next season with a bang and answer some questions and open more doors and windows."

Check back with ABC's Agents of SHIELD at a new time (9 p.m. ET on Tuesdays) when it returns next Fall.
