In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, AMC's Mad Men creator Mathew Weiner discussed the use of fantasy or hallucination sequences in the show.

Most recently, this technique was used in Sunday's mid-season finale, entitled Waterloo, in which Don (Jon Hamm) envisioned a recently deceased Bert Cooper (Robert Morse) sing and dance in the office. With Morse's history in musical theatre, Weiner saw it as a great opportunity to be creative.

"I don't want to do it [hallucinations] all the time," explains Weiner to The Hollywood Reporter, "but it is the language of the show. It's as old as the flashback... sometimes it's drug-induced and sometimes it's not. For me, I'm a person who frequently sees things that aren't there."

With a creative vision such as Weiner's, Mad Men is bound to veer off into uncharted territory on occasion, and has done so previously with much success.

Weiner also goes on to mention the use of a fantasy sequence in the finale for Season 1, when Don returns home alone. Could this technique be used in the series finale to bring the show full circle?

Weiner has already admitted that the interest is there, and while he notes that such techniques are used sparingly, they have been employed in order to pack a punch. With the series nearing its close, it might just be a punch they need.

Mad Men's seventh and final season has been divided into two sections. The second part of the season will conclude in January 2015.
