After years of being the only Standard Definition series on network television, Big Brother is finally going to switch to High Definition ahead of its upcoming 16th season.

Big Brother 16 'Veterans & Relatives' Twist Rumored?

Big Brother producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan confirmed to Vulture this week that the summer reality series would be making the big switch to HD for the new season.

This means that presumably all of the cameras will be filming in HD, and Grodner said that "14 miles of HD cables" were installed to replace their regular wiring system, in addition to an all new digital post-production system.

Big Brother Live Feeds Showing Exclusive New Content?

"It's not just about swapping out cameras," Meehan said. "Everything had to be changed ... and we couldn't do anything that would jeopardize production of the series."

As for the effect impacting the 24/7 live feeds, engineering-operations supervisor Rich Crivelli said that it will be a "noticeable improvement for the internet viewers."

The big switch to HD was not a new concept for Big Brother, as they had been wanting to do it for years now. Grodner said that "we've all wanted to go digital," though it was just a matter of replacing and updating everything, a process that was time-consuming and quite expensive.

"We're getting this firehose of video. We're looking at 75 billion bits of information each second coming in for 24 hours over 100 days," Crivelli noted. "You need to be prepared to collect all of that. Because if you don't know where it all is and how to get to it, then it's of no use to [you]."

Big Brother 16 premieres Wednesday, June 25 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
