Summer Solstice 2014: Celebrations Across The World Include 'Solstice In Times Square' Event For 'Mind, Body & Spirit'? [VIDEO]
This weekend marks the coming of the summer solstice, meaning those looking to get the most out of their day just might want to pay attention.
This Saturday, June 21, marks the longest day of the year in 2014 for the northern hemisphere. The solstice will begin at 6:51 a.m. and end well after 8:30 p.m. It is simultaneously the shortest day of the year for those living in Earth's southern hemisphere.
USA Today has stated that Washington D.C. will have almost fifteen hours of daylight as the Earth tilts on a 25.3 degree angle.
Many cultures celebrate the summer solstice. Known as Midsummer's Even in Sweden, the day is marked through celebration and the maypole. Druids gather at Stonehenge for the occasion. Others celebrate less traditionally, with outdoor parties and musical events to provide lively festivities.
In New York, people are invited to join Solstice in Times Square, an event which will include a massive public mind and body, including yoga and mindful meditation.
According to the formal announcement by Times Square, the event was chosen because "many cultures have associated the summer solstice with a renewal of mind, body, and spirit of creative expression...and what better place to celebrate than in Times Square, America's center for creativity, energy, bright lights and over-the-top artistic expression."
Early on, the Summer Solstice was known as a pagan holiday, and is still celebrated as such today, though other religions have also adapted it into their own cultures.
