ABC's NY Med has spent two years in production and, according to showrunners, it's been worth the wait.

The reality series returns to television for its second season this Thursday with a close look at New York Presbyterian Hospital and Newark's University Hospital, following doctors and patients in the heart of medicine. Participants from Season 1 will be returning, as well as some new faces in the medical industry.

According to executive producer Terry Wrong in an interview with the Daily News, “There are certain things that you just never see, but somehow we were there with cameras when these things happened.”

The series will make the most of its access to these facilities, following intense surgeries and emergency room situations. A wide array of situations will be addressed, from a man suffering a heart condition to a woman who comes in after having been sexually assaulted during a home invasion. Patients are surprisingly forthcoming with their personal lives being depicted onscreen, claiming that people should be made more aware.

Producers were also given an incredibly amount of freedom when it came to production, following the stories as they happened for as long as they happened instead of forcing endings to fit a time table.

“To be given this much time to work on a project is unheard of and it’s amazing," explained Wrong, "And appreciated that they give us this kind of freedom.”

NY Med airs on ABC this Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
