The Leftovers aired its series premiere on Sunday with many characters and plot points introduced, but things will only get more complicated going forward on the HBO series.

The series premiere of The Leftovers featured Kevin (Justin Theroux) dealing with a lot of different encounters, from the mysterious deer to his conflict with the Guilty Remnant. As such, he will seek therapy, according to a plot synopsis for episode 2, titled Penguin One, Us Zero.

Meanwhile, his son Tom (Chris Zylka) will be dealing with problems of his own after the elusive Wayne (Paterson Joseph) all but threatened him to stay away from Christine (Annie Q). The plot synopsis notes that Tom will find himself in a "precarious situation" regarding Christine.

At the Guilty Remnant community, a "frustrated" Meg (Liv Tyler) will be asked to "part with pieces of her past," which may suggest that she is going to join the cult.

Additionally, episode 2 also features high school best friends Jill (Margaret Qualley) and Aimee (Emily Meade) "tailing" Nora Durst (Carrie Coon), the woman who lost her entire family in the Departure.

The Leftovers premiered to 1.8 million viewers Sunday night and 2.1 million overall for the night. This was a bit of a drop from its True Blood lead-in at 9 p.m., which received 3.1 million viewers in its first airing. Despite the drop, fans of The Leftovers shouldn't be too worried as other HBO shows like Girls and Veep have received about one million viewers in their first showings, and they are consistently renewed.

The Leftovers airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on HBO.
