Club Kids co-founder Michael Alig, 48, was released from prison on May 5. After moving into his own apartment over the weekend, it seems Alig is fashioning his own start to a new life.

In 1997 Alig was sentenced to 10-20 years in prison for the March 17, 1996 murder of his roommate and fellow Club Kid, Andre "Angel" Melendez. In a wave of drugs and violence, Alig and Melendez became involved in a confrontation that led to the latter's murder and attempted cover-up.

The Club Kids were known in 1990s clubs for their unique style and over-the-top personas. As noted by People, Melendez's murder garnered national attention. Alig and his accomplice, Robert Riggs, both pled guilty to the crime, admitting to killing his roommate over a drug deal. Alig dismembered Melendez's body before disposing of it in the Hudson River.

The incident inspired Alig's Club Kids friend James St. James to write the book Disco Bloodbath, which in turn led to the film Party Monster in 2003.

A full 17 years later, Alig claims he "feel[s] nothing but shame and disgust" for what he did. "I was a selfish junkie who killed another human being," said Alig in an interview with the New York Post on May 12. "That's not the Michael Alig I am today."

According to Alig's Twitter account, his family held a reunion dinner at the end of May for his release.

Alig posted a photo of his new studio apartment on Sunday, and has announced somewhat passively on Twitter to be writing a book entitled Allgula, which he began during his time in prison.

Melendez's family has not formally commented on Alig's release.
