A new report speculates the future of the suggested merger in season 5 and it seems like while the conversation might still be on if Diane (Christine Baranski) does make good on her decision to join Florrick/Agos, things will take a completely different turn. The producers, Michelle and Robert King, of the show have revealed that it's Diane could waffle and reconsider joining Alicia's (Julianna Margulies) team.

Diane was being asked to run for State's Attorney amidst all the chaos and office politics at Lockhart/Gardner where the partners have been contriving to kick her out of the firm and take over after Will's (Josh Charles) death. "Well, that's exactly what we hope to explore in Season 6," Michelle said. "We will not say that it's definitely happening, but we will say that it is definitely not a thread that we're going to abandon by any means."

Diane had David Lee and Louis Canning (Michael J. Fox) to deal with, who have caught a whiff of her trying to set up a merger with Florrick/Agos, and suggested she didn't have any fight left in her. But if she does eventually change her mind and take up the challenge she might work something out.  So if the show wants to stump its viewers its more likely that they might choose to get Alicia fight this one out.

The highlight of the finale was Eli Gould (Alan Cumming) proposing Alicia (Julianna Margulies) becomea candidate for State's Attorney. The cliffhanger obviously had to do with the big decision Alicia will have to take now.

The finale, titled A Weird Year, aired on May 18.

Season 6 will premiere on CBS on September 21.
