Fans weren't the only ones surprised when Alcide, played by Joe Manganiello, was killed off True Blood. Author Charlaine Harris, who wrote the book series on which the show is based, was also shocked by the character's death.

Did Luke Grimes Leave True Blood Because He Didn't Want To Play Gay?

"I did [watch] because I'm very fond of him," Harris told AccessHollywood.com about Manganiello. "He's a lovely guy, inwardly and outwardly, and I was very surprised, because, of course, that isn't how my books end, but then, I didn't really expect them to go out the way my books did. They haven't really followed them significantly, which is fine, but it just leaves me wondering who else will bite the dust before the series is over."

Manganiello was the second main character to go in Season 7 after Tara's (Rutina Wesley) season premiere death. Manganiello admitted he was sad about his exit, too. "I don't know, sad. Sad is probably the safest word I can say," the Magic Mike star said about how he felt. "Hopefully, my character will be remembered for his heart and having a big heart. But I will probably be remembered for taking my shirt off and growling. It is what it is."

Despite the HBO show not following the storylines exactly in Harris' book series, the author still said she watches the show religiously. "I watch every week," she said. "The show is their thing and they've never tried to tell me how to write the books and I wouldn't presume to tell them how to write the show."
