If viewers were worried that the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and his companion don't know what consequences can stem from their time-traveling, universe-spanning adventures, the upcoming season will certainly prove them wrong.

Now that there is a new Doctor at the TARDIS controls, the BBC series is changing up the playbook a little bit.

"I think [season 8] feels more serious. One of the watchwords we have this year is there are consequences for choosing to live like this," said showrunner Steven Moffat, according to SFX. "It's not a fairytale. If you have people back home, if you run away it's going to have an effect on them. And it's not necessarily always going to be lovely. And does the Doctor make you better? We want to make it feel that these adventures can hurt..."

The Time Lord and Clara (Jenna Louise Coleman) will make their way to Victorian London when Doctor Who returns to the BBC and BBC America on Aug. 23. Click the video below to see a preview for season 8.
