Anson Mount, who stars on AMC's Hell on Wheels as Cullen Bohannon the Confederate Civil War veteran turned railroad man/outlaw, has been discussing the show as it prepares to return for its fourth season.

Hell On Wheels Star Discusses How He Approaches His Role

On Friday, he talked to the Tennessean a little bit about one might expect from Bohannon, and the show, this season.

At the end of season three, Bohannon married a woman, who is also pregnant with his child, and their relationship will certainly be weighing on Bohannon this season. "In terms of Cullen, I think they've drawn a really interesting arc this year," he said, before going on to say that this season is going to be less about him as a main character, and more about the railroad and the impact it is having on a lot of people. To a degree, this makes sense, because three seasons have allowed the show to build a larger, deeper supporting cast, giving them a wider variety of stories to tell.

Stylistic Hell On Wheels Promo Debuts

That's not to say that Bohannon won't have his own storylines going on. Mount said he feels that his character is maturing, but that he will continue to make immature mistakes. He described it as that his character "is trying to do right by this young lady. But at the same time, it's kind of like saying, 'I'm a heroin addict and I'm going to have a family.' It's like, 'Whoa.' "

The fourth season of Hell on Wheels premieres Saturday, August 2 at 8:00 p.m. on AMC.
