The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is rapidly gaining popularity and tons of celebrities have joined in on the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The disease, which affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, is also named after the late New York Yankees player because he brought international attention to it in 1939 when he was diagnosed.

The ALS challenge requires a person to pour a bucket of freezing water over their head or donate $100 to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) research. They also have to nominate another person to partake in the challenge.

The ALS Association has received $4 million between July 29 and Aug. 12 in comparison to $1.12 million last year during the same time.

"We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease,” said Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative."
