After Netflix's Orange is the New Black went home empty-handed at Monday night's Emmy Awards, one of the show's stars is suggesting a change for the Academy.

Lea DeLaria, who plays the standout Big Boo in Orange is the New Black, said after the Governor's Ball Monday that there should be a "dramedy" category going forward.

"I will say this, the Academy needs to grab a clue and get a category for dramedy," DeLaria told Mashable. "This has been going on for too long."

She elaborated that there have been "dramedies," a.k.a. shows that infuse comedy and drama for several years now.

"They have a category for f---ing reality television - pardon my 'f---' - but they don't have a category for dramedy, which has been on American television longer than reality television," she said. "That seems wrong to me, and we wouldn't have these issues about 'You're nominated in the wrong category. You're nominated in the right category.'"

Much of the criticism at this year's Emmys was the questionable category placement for some shows. For example, many did not think Orange is the New Black was funny enough to be considered in the Comedy categories.

Regardless, DeLaria is confident that the Emmys will eventually recognize and reward OITNB as the series continues.

"We're the new kids on the block; it will take some time for them to get used to us," she said. "We'll see what happens next year."

Orange is the New Black lost to Modern Family in both Best Comedy Series and Best Directing for a Comedy Series. Taylor Schilling (who plays Piper) lost to Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Veep for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series while Kate Mulgrew (Red) lost to Allison Janney in Mom for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. They also lost the Best Writing award to Louis C.K. for Louie.
