While there has been much speculation around the next Captain America movie, one rumor that has followed the franchise since its first film was the return of the Red Skull, who was teleported away during the final battle scene. Could the villain start his return in the next movie?

A New Team Assembled At The End Of 'Avengers 2' Could Influence 'Cap 3' Plot

Screen Rant talked about the return of Red Skull with the directors of Captain America 3, Joe and Anthony Russo, and they were mum on the possibility but did not totally rule out the character making a comeback at some point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"We can't really comment specifically in terms of where we're going with it, just because we don't want to spoil anything for anybody. But certainly, look. That's the great thing about the Marvel universe, is anything is possible," Anthony said.

'Captain America 3' Could Feature A New Team To Help The Hero

"All these characters exist. And as we've seen on the publishing side, there's very inventive, creative ways to make characters relevant again and surprising ways to make the characters relevant again. He's a great character. Whether or not he finds his way back I can't really say."

While the actor who played the character, Hugo Weaving, has said that he doesn't want to return, that doesn't rule out a different incarnation of the Red Skull coming back from the dimension that he was teleported to. This would allow for the villain to return and leave Weaving out of the requirement to come back to the role.

There was rumors that Robert Redford would be a incarnation of the Red Skull but it just turned out he was evil on his own during Winter Soldier.

Red Skull seems like a villain who could return, but maybe the full comeback will have to wait until after the next movie, and with a new Captain to fight.

Captain America 3 is set to open in theaters on May 6, 2016.
