Shipp has already faced lots of criticism and backlash after she agreed to take on the lead role as the Are You That Somebody singer.

She told Hip Hollywood recently that the biopic is not shying away from the then 15-year-old's relationship with R. Kelly, who was in his late 20s at the time. Still, they only have so much to work with when it comes to portraying the more intimate facts.

Shipp Opens Up About 'Least Favorite Part' About Playing Aaliyah

Shipp said, "We were pretty detailed. But to be honest with you, and any adult who has ever been in a relationship can you tell this; no one knows what goes on in your relationship except you and that other person. So yeah, we tackled it as much as we could. Sadly, Aaliyah has passed on and R. Kelly doesn't want to talk about it, which is understandable."

The actress went on to say that while it was difficult, they could not just sweep the relationship under the rug - especially since it was instrumental part in Aaliyah's career as well as her image.

"It's something that she went through in her life. And he was a huge part of her life and a huge part of her career taking off. She just took it to a whole mother level. But, in the beginning R. Kelly was there for her. He wasn't just a producer. He was a friend."

Still, she reassured viewers that they will not see any racy or risque scenes in the upcoming biopic.
