Some good news has been announced for all the Call the Midwife fans.

New Character To Experience 'Tragic Moments' On 'Call The Midwife'

Even though the fourth season has yet to air, it's already been made official on Monday that the BBC One series has been renewed for a fifth season. Digital Spy also mentioned that there will be a Christmas special in 2015 and there will be eight new episodes in 2016.

Controller of BBC Drama commissioning Ben Stephenson revealed his excitement for the new episodes to come.

'Call The Midwife' Dishes On Her Character's 'Horrible Story'

"Call the Midwife is one of UK's most popular dramas and in season four, [series creator] Heidi Thomas's writing meets new heights," he said. "I'm delighted to be commissioning a new series."

Actress Dorothy Atkinson, who played Jane Sutton on the series, recently dished to Express about her character and why she feels so connected to her.

"My cousin is a midwife," Atkinson said. "And those books were passed around our family. These characters actually existed and that's why the stories are so good."

"I feel very connected to Jane Sutton, the woman I played, but she was brought up in a workhouse and hers is a horrible, horrible story," the actress continued. "I cried when I read it. She was a kind of waif who found her voice and became a trainee nurse when the nun, played by Jenny Agutter, gave her a break, just to get her out of the institution."

Call the Midwife is expected to return for a Christmas special this December on BBC One.
